Jashub Wing House
Jashub Wing
Jashub built a new house about 1702 on his marriage to Anna Hoxie (daughter of Lodowick) on the Upper Road, on land inherited from Daniel Sr. in 1698. The house was described as still standing in 1887, west of the then Alms House on Charles St. It was burned but rebuilt in 1737. Jashub apparently lived here all his life, dying sometime after 1740, but none of his seven children succeeded him here… The house probably was sold out of the Wing family after Jashub’s death, and may have been used later in connection with the operation of the Town Farm and poor house just east, which commenced there in 1773. The 1857 property map shows the Jashub Wing house as owned by Lucy Thompson. Lucy was black, and may have been employed at the farm. Town Vital Statistics show Lucy was the widow of Samuel Thompson, born about 1800, and had several children. The property became part of Crow Farm, and the site of the house is known to the Crowells from remnants plowed up. (Owl 1976, p.
